Day 2: Burnsall to Hubberholme

Back to The Dales Way

Day 2, Burnsall to Hubberholme, 15.6 miles, 1.99 miles/hour. We expected this to be one of the harder days, due to the mileage, heat and humidity - virtually no cover on the trail. Much reward though, as we pass through through the heart of Wharfdale, starting along the River Wharfe. We then diverge through limestone outcrops and ledges (many caves!), then return back to the River at the end. We also visit some lovely villages along the way.

We’re in Burnsall here. Stump Cross is quite a ways off the trail so we didn’t go there, but we did see few other little caves along the way.

Leaving Grassington. This is a typical landscape along this section with stone ladders over the stone fences through farmland.

Starting to see the limestone outcrops as we head toward Conistone Pie.

Reminders about lambing season and bird breeding season

Limekiln, mid-1800s. Quicklime was used to fertilize the soil. You can see the sheep in there taking shelter from the sun and heat. (We would have done the same if they weren’t in there already.)

Kettlewell. We stopped here for ice cream and a Coke. It was still really hot.

It was hay-bailing season—storing hay for the cows and sheep for the winter months.

Hay had been mowed, but not bailed yet.

Trail is back along the Wharfe.

Keep those pets on a leash!

The George Inn, Hubberholme. I stayed here in 1997. Not much has changed, including the mattresses. It’s a great pub though, we had an awesome dinner and met some people (and their dog, Jack) who live seasonally in nearby Buckden. The Inn was originally built as a vicarage.
